How Hawaiian names are put together

Most Hawaiian names are transparent. A speaker hears Leilani and hears two ordinary words, lei (garland) and lani (heaven), in the same way an English speaker hears Rose or Hope. Names stack these words in a few recurring patterns: an article plus a noun (Kalani, the heavens), a noun plus lani (Pualani, heavenly flower), lei plus a noun (Leimomi, pearl lei), or kuʻu plus a noun (Kuʻuipo, my sweetheart). Learn the 5 most common words, lani, kai, lei, aloha, pua, and you can read the meaning of most names on sight.

Each entry below follows the Hawaiian Dictionary of Pukui and Elbert and links to the online edition at wehewehe.org so you can check the full definition. The count is the number of names on this site whose word-by-word breakdown contains the word.

Questions people ask

What is the most common word in Hawaiian names?

Lani, meaning sky, heaven, or royal, appears in 218 of the names on this site, far more than any other word. Kai (sea), lei (garland), pua (flower), and aloha (love) come next.

Why do so many Hawaiian names start with Ka or Ke?

Ka and ke both mean the. Ke is used before words beginning with k, e, a, or o, and ka everywhere else, so Kekoa is the warrior and Kalani is the heavens. A name with the article points at one particular thing rather than the idea in general.

What does lani mean at the end of a name?

Lani means heaven, sky, or royal. Placed at the end of a name it lifts the first word skyward or marks it as noble: Leilani is a heavenly lei, Pualani a heavenly flower, Kailani sea and sky.

Can I combine these words to make a new name?

Families do, and many of the names on this site are modern combinations, which are labeled as such. Keep to the standard patterns (article plus noun, noun plus lani, lei or pua plus noun) so the result reads naturally to a Hawaiian speaker, and check the dictionary link on each word page for meanings that might clash.
