Water of Lea
Wai is fresh water and Lea is the goddess Laea or Lea, patron of canoe makers. Canoe builders made offerings to her before felling a koa tree, and watched for her bird form — the ʻelepaio — to tell them whether the trunk was sound.
If the ʻelepaio pecked at the felled log, the wood was infested and the tree was left. The bird was reading the timber for them, and the practice is a good example of observation carried inside a religious form.
