A shawl
Kīhei is a cape or shawl — a rectangle of kapa worn over one shoulder and knotted. The name suits the shape of the place: a narrow strip of coast lying along the water.
The kīhei was everyday wear and also ceremonial, and the word is still used for the cloth worn at graduations and protocol occasions.
The dry side
Kīhei sits in the rain shadow of Haleakalā and is among the driest inhabited parts of Maui. It was sparsely settled until the late twentieth century, when water was brought in and it grew quickly into the island's largest residential area.
