Growing mountain
Ulu is to grow, and the name was given as the thing was happening: the eruption from 1969 to 1974 on Kīlauea's East Rift built a new shield roughly four hundred feet high where there had been none.
It was the longest rift-zone eruption on Kīlauea in recorded history until Puʻu ʻŌʻō overtook it.
What it left
The flows buried several miles of the Chain of Craters Road and reached the sea, adding new coastline. The road was rebuilt and the lava fields either side are now among the most accessible in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
