An unrecorded meaning
The meaning of Kamakou is not preserved in the standard sources. Makou is a native plant, and ka makou would give the makou, but the connection is not established.
At 4,961 feet it is the summit of East Molokaʻi, itself the remnant of a volcano whose northern half collapsed into the sea, leaving the highest sea cliffs in the world along that coast.
The preserve
The Kamakou Preserve, managed by the Nature Conservancy, protects around three thousand acres of cloud forest holding more than two hundred plant species found only in Hawaiʻi. Access is by guided hike, along a boardwalk through the Pēpēʻōpae bog.
