It was coined in the 1920s by the developer Charles Frazier, who with Richard Trent was subdividing beachfront land on the windward side of Oʻahu and wanted something that would sell. They assembled lani (heaven) and kai (sea) and read the result as "heavenly sea".
The land already had a name: Kaʻōhao, which describes a tying together, as the two ends of a lei or a rope are bound. The older name has been returning to use — the neighbourhood's elementary school took back the name Kaʻōhao in 2018.
